TYNECASTLE HIGH SCHOOL

Country: United Kingdom
Campus/location : Edinburgh

Arms of Tynecastle High School

Official blazon

Per pale Argent and Azure, a castle of two towers flagged each with postern and window, and portcullis raised, all counterchanged, and in chief a rose also counterchanged, and in base a crescent likewise counterchanged.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 31, 1966.

The design of the arms clearly references the school's name; although the rationale behind the design is not recorded in the Lyon Court archives, the school is sited on land formerly belonging to Sir John Napier of Merchiston, the celebrated inventor of logarithms, and the rose and the crescent may therefore allude to the Napier of Merchiston arms.
