Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1619 and used by the company and colony of Virginia until 1776.

Before a grant could be completed, the company collapsed, and Virginia came under the direct rule of the Crown, but the arms would be used de facto by the Colony and Dominion of Virginia until Independence in 1776.
