Origin/meaning
The oldest known seal dates from the 17th century and shows the above arms. The mountain is a canting symbol (Fels=rock). The lions are most likely the lion of the State of Bamberg, as the town was bought by the Bishops of Bamberg in 1621. The lions are crowned, which may be a reference to the Imperial decree of 1421 in which the local castle received special privileges. In 1819 the crowns were officially removed, as the town was now part of Bayern and all reference to older rulers were removed. In the middle of the 20th century the old arms and colours were restored.
