Official blazon
German In Gold ein mit einer silbernen Schrägleiste überdeckter, rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe, der oben von einem waagrechten, beiderseits von je einem aufrechten blauen Fisch begleitet ist.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal of the city, which probably dates from 1313 when the city rights were granted, showed a shield with the lion, surrounded, outside the shield, by three fish. The lion is the lion of the State of Bamberg, to which the city belonged until 1803. The fish probably indicate the importance of fisheries for the city at the time.

In 1819 the arms were changed, as the city now formed part of Bayern and all references to older states were removed. The new arms showed a blue field with a silver bend (blue and silver are the colours of Bayern), with three fish, one above and two below the bend. In 1836 King Ludwig allowed the use of old symbols, but the old arms were not officially restored until February 12, 1952.
