Origin/meaning
Zell received city rights probably in the late 13th century, and became a possession of the Archbishops of Trier in 1332. Until 1794 the city was part of the State of Trier.
The composition of the arms appears already on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from around 1400. The cross is the cross of the State of Trier, the crossed keys are the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of Trier. In the late 15th century the composition was placed on a shield and the arms have not changed since.
