STEIN AM RHEIN

Canton : Schaffhausen

Wappen von Stein am Rhein

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms show St. George, the patron saint of the Benedictan Abbey of St. George. The abbey was moved in 1007 from Hohentwiel to what is now Stein am Rhein. The town developed around the abbey and became part of Switzerland in the 15th century. The monastery was abandoned after the Reformation, but the saint remained in the arms.

In the Coffee Hag albums below there are different versions of the arms shown. The saint has been depicted in different ways and also facing either left or right. I have no information on the origin of the oldest Coffee Hag arms with the divided shield.
