Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 17, 1960.

Drammen was founded in 1811 as a merger of Bragernes and Strømsø. Both former towns has seals, but Drammen continued the use of the seal of Bragernes, which eventually was granted in 1960 as arms for the city.

The seal of Bragernes was known since 1723. The seal of Strømsø is first mentioned in 1704 and showed a church and village and the Norwegian lion in the corner. In a later seal the lion was placed more prominently in the base under the church.

When Nedre Eiker and Selvik were merged with Drammen, a competition for new municipal arms was held. This resulted in a number of proposals, and the citizens of Drammen could then chose from the proposals below. In the end, however, the old arms were kept.
