Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1947.

The arms show a representation of the local palace, built by Osbertus, first Norman Bishop of Exeter. The mitre also alludes to the fact that the Manor of Paignton belonged to the Diocese of Exteter. The dolphin is a symbol of the merchant venturers of Devon.
